article imageIsraeli PM Netanyahu cancels Mandela funeral trip

By Sami Zaatari     Dec 9, 2013 in World
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be attending a memorial service for Nelson Mandela, cancelling his planned attendance.
According to the Israeli PM, the high cost of visiting South Africa lay behind his decision, with the trip reportedly costing $2 million.
70 heads of state and several former leaders have already confirmed their planned attendance at Nelson Mandela's funeral, including that of President Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian authority.
Netanyahu's cancellation will raise eyebrows, with the well known history of Israel's support for former apartheid South Africa, the very apartheid regime Mandela fought against, earning him his worldwide famous recognition.
