Bridgewater - Dayna Morales, the 22-year-old lesbian waitress from New Jersey who sparked a firestorm of controversy after she posted a “copy” of a customer’s receipt with anti-gay remarks scribbled on it to Have a Gay Day’s Facebook Page has resigned.
Morales emailed her story to a gay advocacy website before posting a photograph of the purported check on her Facebook page last month. This resulted in an international controversy with thousands of dollars being donated to Morales, who said she would send all proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project, according to a Fox News report.
However, according to Bridgewater Patch reports, a representative for the nonprofit group that caters to veterans returning from overseas checked for donations by Morales’ name and within the ZIP codes for Bridgewater, N.J., where she worked, and Bedminster, where Morales said she lives, and was unable to locate any of her donations. The Wounded Warrior Project rep did acknowledge the donations could have been made from a different ZIP code or by a third-party.
The New Jersey woman and the restaurant she worked at came to a mutual decision that it was time for her to leave, according to a Dec. 7 Facebook statement by Gallop Asian Bistro regarding Morales’ employment there.
The receipt in question.
The receipt in question.
After Morales posted the “copy” of a receipt on Have a Gay Day’s Facebook Page the picture went viral, mostly in her defense against the “Christian” family who she said left a note on their check declining to tip her because of her lifestyle after they racked up a bill for 93.55.
However, when the couple who dined at the restaurant with their two children last month confirmed the receipt was theirs and that they had left an $18 tip, Morales’ story began to fray.
Morales claimed she was a former Marine, but subsequent research by NBC revealed she was a reservist who was less than honorably discharged after “she stopped showing up for drills.”
Meanwhile, according to the Fox News report, several of Morales’ acquaintances have questioned her credibility. Kristina Calamusa, who described herself as a former friend of Morales, told The Daily Caller late last month that the waitress told her that she was “blown up by a land mine overseas.”
Morales was reportedly never stationed in a war zone overseas. The Journal News of White Plains, N.Y., has also quoted acquaintances of Morales who say she lied about her military service.
Julie Howat and Karolee Larkin, both 23, related to the newspaper a story Morales supposedly told them about her serving in Afghanistan and surviving an explosion that killed everyone in her platoon, leaving her as the unit’s sole survivor. But Maj. Shawn Haney, a spokesman for the Marines, said in an email to The Journal News that while Morales did serve in the Marines Corps reserve from July 2009 to May 2013, there’s no indication in her record of combat service in Afghanistan or Iraq.
