article imagePhoto Essay: Winter in Jilin, China Special

By Lonna Lisa Williams     Dec 8, 2013 in World
Jilin - In the northeast of China, Jilin City is divided by a river that is bordered by colorful buildings which look even more wintery in their first cover of snow.
Jilin Province, in northeast China, used to be called Manchuria. It borders Outer Mongolia to the west, Russia to the northeast, and North Korea to the southeast. In fact, you can stand at the corner of the three countries' borders. A viewpoint of a river marks the spot where China, Russia, and North Korea meet. The capital of Jilin Province is the large city of Changchun, where the Last Emperor of China had ancestral ties.
Jilin City is the second-largest city in Jilin Province. It is divided in two by the Songhua River which runs from the Russian border in the northeast toward the border of North Korea in the southeast. Jilin is called the River City and is famous for its winter beauty when snow blankets the river banks and ices trees along the river.
I have been teaching high school in Jilin since October, and I greeted its first snowfall with my camera. Enjoy my wintry photos of Jilin's buildings, bridge, schools, and river.
