Spanish police arrested three people, including two French crew members from a yacht approximately 550 nautical miles from Spain's Canary Islands and one Spaniard on land. In the process they also seized 550 kilos (1,200 pounds) of cocaine.
According to the National Police (in Spanish), one of the crew members attempted to set fire to the boat when the Spanish navy ship approached with police officers on board.
According to the Interior Ministry's press release:
"As the team of special agents approached, one of the crew members who was at the helm of the vessel tried to manipulate the motor, producing a great deal of smoke, to set fire to the sailboat and avoid the seizure of the drugs."
Police officers boarded the boat and found the cocaine, hidden in the walls of the cabins. At present, no value has been provided for the drugs. They then arrested two men of French origin.
A third man, of Spanish origin, was arrested in Marbella in southern Spain as part of the same investigation.
Police say that the three suspects may belong to a French-Spanish group, specializing in the smuggling of cocaine between South America and Europe.
Spanish authorities have seized more than 20 tonnes of cocaine over the last year, accounting for 41 percent of the total amount of cocaine seized in Europe.
The latest operation was conducted by the Central Narcotics Brigade of the Central UDYCO, attached to the General Judicial Police, with assistance from the Special Operations Group, GRECO of the Costa del Sol, agents in the Canary Islands, the Spanish Naval Armada, Ministry of Defense and the British Police NCA.
