New images released today by the BBC reveal that a Cyberman made of wood will make an appearance in the Christmas special of the long-running science-fiction television drama series.
As reported in November, The Time of the Doctor features the return of several of the programme’s most popular monster races, including the Silence, Daleks and Weeping Angels.
The presence in the adventure of the metallic Cybermen, meanwhile, was revealed back in September. However, at least one of the creatures appears to be made of wood.
Hypable ventures, “Could it be they’ve finally found a solution that could work against his sonic screwdriver?” The Doctor’s famous all-purpose electronic device doesn’t work on wood, as was first demonstrated in 2008 in Silence in the Library and referred to recently, in The Day of the Doctor (2013).
The BBC have been teasing elements of this year’s Christmas special since the closing moments of the anniversary episode, which was simulcast on TV in 94 countries on Saturday, November 23, as well as being shown in hundreds of cinemas in 15 of them.
A brief synopsis for The Time of the Doctor reads:
Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them — the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.
Earlier this week, a first set of photographs from the story were released, as were movie-style posters, to promote it. The second set of photos — including two of the Wooden Cyberman — appeared today.
A video clip and two trailers have also been released.

The Cybermen are the Doctor’s second most-popular monsters — after the Daleks — having first appeared in the series in 1966. Then, as now, they are featuring in a “regeneration” story. That is, the occasion on which the Doctor — a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey — dies and is reborn in a different body. It is a devise that was introduced in the sixties when it became clear that William Hartnell — who played the original Doctor — was unable to continue in the part. In the closing moments of the serial, The Tenth Planet, he was seen to transform into a younger man: the Second Doctor was played by Patrick Troughton.
The Cybermen were last seen in Doctor Who earlier this year, in Nightmare in Silver, which was written by Neil Gaiman and featured Eve de Leon Allen and Kassius Carey Johnson as the Doctor's TARDIS travelling companions, Angie and Artie Maitland. It will be the second time they have appeared in a Christmas special — their previous story being The Next Doctor (2009), by Russell T Davies, which starred David Tennant as the Doctor and David Morrisey as the Doctor/Jackson Pace.
The Time of the Doctor marks the final outing for Matt Smith, who has played the Doctor for four years. Viewers will see his Doctor regenerate towards the end of the special, becoming the new Doctor, as played by Peter Capaldi (The Thick of It).
The adventure guest-satrs Orla Brady (Fringe) who, according to Digital Spy, plays a character “from the Doctor's past, with the plot of the festive episode revolving around her.”
