article imageUber makes special Christmas offer: We'll bring the tree to you

By Tucker Cummings     Dec 6, 2013 in Technology
The makers of the trendy smartphone app Uber are spreading holiday cheer. While the app is usually used to hire a car for transporting a person, the Uber team rolled out a limited time offer that brought Christmas trees right to the customer's door.
Best known as the mobile app that lets you hire a taxi, SUV, or town car in major U.S. cities, Uber made headlines earlier this month when they ran a Christmas tree delivery promotion in partnership with Home Depot. The UberTREE promotion ran for one day only, December 5. It has not been announced whether Uber will run the UberTREE promotion again before this Christmas.
The UberTREE package cost $135, which included home delivery, a tree stand, and a Noble or Douglas fir tree measuring between seven and eight feet tall. The UberTREE deal was only available in a few select U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, NYC, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington DC.
This is not the first time Uber has run a special promotion. Earlier this year, the company ran a promotion where they delivered kittens on-demand to select locations in NYC, Seattle, and San Francisco.
If the UberTREE promotion was successful, it may just make a reappearance next year. While some consumers prefer to buy their trees from a farm, many others liked the idea of having Uber bring a tree right to their doorstep. The company has some additional plans for the holiday season, including an "UberSleigh" campaign slated to begin earlier this month. The UberSleigh campaign will be collecting toys for children in need.
