article imageSacramento Ballet fine-tunes 'The Nutcracker' Special

By W. Mark Dendy     Dec 6, 2013 in Entertainment
Sacramento - Last night, the Sacramento Ballet dancers did a run through of the popular seasonal ballet, “The Nutcracker,” which opens Saturday, Dec. 7th, for a 13 performance run .
The full-costume, dress rehearsal went for two hours while the dancers and the orchestra fine tuned their performances under the watchful eyes of the husband-and-wife, artistic director team of Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda.
This year, five of the 15 performances will feature live music with a full-orchestra, and over 500 children will share the stage with the company dancers. The Sacramento Ballet boasts the largest group of children in the world to dance with a professional ballet troupe.
The sets for the Sacramento Ballet’s "Nutcracker" are both brilliant and beautiful, and according to Cunningham were built in St. Petersburg, Russia by the same construction company that built the original Nutcracker sets over a century ago.
The complexity of such an enormous production is no challenge for directors Cunningham and Binda. Their work could be compared to that of a watchmaker piecing together tiny gears into the making of a fine instrument.
Cunningham embraces his dancers as collaborators. And this works well as he and Binda see that each move is performed with precision, with every note in perfect time, so that when the show goes on, it is truly a work of art.
The show opens this Saturday, Dec. 7 with a 1:00pm matinee and another show at 7:00pm.
