article imageTom Daley speaks to Jonathan Ross about 'love at first sight'

By Mathew Wace Peck     Dec 5, 2013 in Sports
Tom Daley, the British Olympic-medal-winning diver, has given his first television interview since coming out earlier this week about his relationship with another man.
Daley is interviewed by Jonathan Ross for ITV's The Jonathan Ross Show, which is due to be broadcast on Saturday night.
In the interview, the 19-year-old talks openly about his decision to come out and his happiness since beginning his relationship earlier this year. Daley also reveals that he was the one to instigate the relationship.
It really was love at first sight, I'd never felt like anything like it before. We were at a party and I hadn't even spoken to him all night. I didn't know what to do or if he was gay at first. I made the first move, I typed "call me" in his notes with a smiley face on his phone and the next day he texted. He makes me feel safe and happy. Right now, I couldn't be happier. I'd never felt the feeling of love, it happened so quickly, I was completely overwhelmed by it to the point I can't get him out of my head all the time. I've never had it before where I love someone and they love me just as much.
Although Daley hasn't named his partner, a number of British tabloid newspapers, including the Mirror, as well as the American entertainment site E!, have claimed that it is Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter.
Likewise, Black has not confirmed the claims. However, the day after Daley published his coming-out YouTube video, the writer tweeted, "Slept all day today after my trip to Russia. Did I miss anything?"

Dustin Lance Black is an American screenwriter, director, film and television producer. His films include J. Edgar (2011), Virginia (2010) and Milk (2008), for which he won an Academy Award and Writers Guild of America Award. Black is also a well-respected gay-rights activist. His play, 8, portrays the closing arguments of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the federal trial that led to the overturning of Proposition 8 — an amendment eliminating rights of same-sex couples to marry in California. Black wrote the play following the court's denial of a motion to release a video recording of the trial.
Other excerpts from the interview Daley gave to Ross have appeared in China Daily USA. "It was a terrifying decision to make," he confides. "I didn't know what the reaction was going to be like, I didn't know how it was going to go, but I felt I needed to say something. I wanted to say something in my own words and from the heart, I didn't know what else to do."
"I have nothing to hide"
Asked by Ross why he dated a girl last year, but is now dating a guy, the young man replied, "Well, it's because I had a girlfriend last year. It wasn't until spring this year that it came upon me, I didn't expect this, it happened and everything clicked and felt right. It felt like a dirty little secret, it felt like I had chains wrapped around me, I couldn't be who I was, I felt alone and trapped."
The relief Daley now feels is evident. "Just telling one person made me feel so much better, just that one person took a weight off my shoulder," Daley reveals. "I told Sophie my best friend first, as I knew she'd be really accepting of it. She's been so supportive and there for me. Now that everyone knows, I have nothing to hide, those chains that I felt wrapped around me are gone and I can carry on with my life as normal and be happy."
Indeed; since Daley posted his YouTube video — Tom Daley: Something I want to say... — on Monday, it has received almost 9 million views and over 42,000 comments.
The Jonathan Ross Show will be screened on Saturday, December 7, at 10.45 p.m. (GMT) on ITV 1 and one hour later, at 11.45 p.m. (GMT) on ITV 1 +1.
