London - An unusual pact between Britain and China involving pig semen could be worth £45million for British farmers. The first exports are expected to start in the Spring of 2014.
Britain in seeking to cash in China’s craze for pork, and has struck a deal to export millions of pounds worth of pig semen, according to reports.
Reportedly, China has half of world’s pigs but most of the pig stocks are of inferior quality. Imported pig semen from Britain would give China the option to breeding healthier and productive pig breeds.
The deal allows export of high-quality frozen and fresh "porcine semen" to China ensuring that Britain's best pig seeds will sustain the largest pig population in the world.
The pig-semen deal is estimated worth £45m worth of revenue for UK firms.
Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, who is part of David Cameron’s delegation to China, is also looking at the option of exporting pigs' trotters to China.
Pigs' trotters are a delicacy in China but regarded as a waste product in the UK. According to the Telegraph, pigs' trotters market could be bring an additional £7.5 million a year to Britain if the export-deal gets through.
“The exports start in the first quarter of next year. Four UK artificial insemination centers, based in England and Northern Ireland, will start making preparations for the exports in the New Year,” the Guardian reported.
