Just when it was safe to turn on the TV, the Kardashians are back

By Gene Kosowan     Dec 3, 2013 in Entertainment
Don't touch that dial, remote or anything else requiring batteries. The first family of reality TV returns for a ninth season of self-indulgence.
E! Entertainment Television announced Tuesday that Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the unscripted media staple that unseated the likes of predecessors Paris Hilton and the Osbournes as primetime tabloid fodder, return to the tube in January 2014. No specific date has been announced, but given its previous success and status as the variety channel's most-watched program, the show will likely remain in its Sunday 9 p.m. (ET) time slot.
The show, which enjoyed a viewership of 2.3 million Americans with an additional DVR audience of 3.5 million, will deal with the latest hijinx surrounding the family.
As usual, expect much of the attention to revolve around Kim Kardashian, whose created a great deal of publicity mileage with her engagement to narcissistic rapper Kanye West and the birth of their oddly-monikered child North West. Will this be the season the relationship goes south when a tempestuous love triangle erupts between Kim, Kanye and Kanye's ego?
And despite stories surround the split between matriarch Kris and husband, former Olympian Bruce Jenner, will both personalities have it out this season? And what of Khloé's marriage to NBA dribble Lamar Odom, who's rumoured to be doing a few full court presses behind her back? And what will Kourtney, probably the only sibling without a major scandal to her name, do to ensure she's not feeling left out?
Regardless, this might be one occasion when a reality series that's more than excessive in its hyperbole lives up to its buildup.
