The British diver and TV personality Tom Daley has taken to YouTube to announce that he is in a relationship with another man.
In the video, Tom Daley: Something I want to say..., the 19-year-old Olympic-medal-winning diver says that his partner of several months has made him very happy.
"In spring this year, my life changed massively when I met someone," Daley confides, "and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. That someone is a guy."
Continuing, he says, "It did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen, but it wasn't until spring this year that something just clicked. It felt right."
The sportsman then explains that he'd decided to come out about his sexuality via YouTube so that he didn't get his "words twisted. I wanted to put an end to all the rumours, the speculation [and] just say it."
Daley also says that his closest friends and family support his coming out publicly, and he believed that his late father, Robert Daley, who died of brain cancer in 2011, would be proud of him: "He always said to me, 'As long as you're happy, I'm happy,'" Daley adds.
Digital Spy adds, however, that some of his other relatives "had mixed opinions [and] wanted [him] to keep it quiet."
As reported by the Mirror, there has been speculation about the teenager's sexuality for years, although, like most young people setting out on their journey through life, until now, he hadn't felt sure or comfortable talking about it.
"Of course I still fancy girls," Daley continues."But I mean, right now, I'm dating a guy and I couldn't be happier. It makes me feel safe and just really does feel right. Is it a big deal? I don't think so. I wanted to say something and I feel like now I'm ready and I wanted to do it."
Daley, who has been diving since he seven years old, specialises in the 10-metre platform event. In 2009, at just 15, he became the FINA World Champion.
In 2010, he went on to win two gold medals for England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games: in the 10-metre synchro-diving, with his diving partner, Max Brick; and the 10-metre Individual platform competition.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he represented Great Britain. He was the country's youngest competitor, the youngest competitor of any nationality outside the sport of swimming and the youngest person to participate in an Olympic final at the Games.
At the 2012 London Olympics, Daley achieved a bronze medal for Team GB in the 10-metre Individual platform competition.
Earlier this year, he became the expert diving mentor to competitors in the ITV reality-TV series Splash!, which he will return to for its second season in 2014.
As of writing, Daley's "coming-out" YouTube video has received almost 2 million hits and generated around 22,000 comments from well-wishers.
