article imageDoctors denied disabled baby a heart transplant

By Owen Weldon     Dec 1, 2013 in World
Maverick, six months old, was born with a severe heart defect. He has received two surgeries, but still went into heart failure. Doctors discussed a heart transplant with parents Autumn Chenkus and Charlie Higgs. However, Maverick ended up being denied.
According to CNN, Maverick was denied the transplant because doctors say that he didn't qualify due to a rare genetic defect that put him at a high risk for infections, as well as tumors. Doctors said that a heart transplant would be too risky to do.
Chenkus then did some research on her son's condition, and she said that not one of the studies that she found mentioned anything about the increased risk for infections or tumors. She went on to email one study's author, who confirmed that she was correct.
According to the NY Post, Chenkus accused the doctors of discrimination. She said that they didn't want to waste a heart on her son, who was getting worse.
Maverick's parents then tried to get him admitted to hospitals in Cleveland and Philadelphia, but were unsuccessful.
According to WIBW, Eventually doctors in Boston decided to accept Maverick as a patient. However, they did not guarantee he would be eligible for a heart transplant, but they did not rule it out.
On May 18, Maverick was taken to Boston, where doctors tinkered with his medications for three weeks. That was when he started to respond quickly. His blood pressured dropped by more than 30 points and his oxygen levels increased by a lot.
Maverick became more lively in Boston, and within one month he gained one pound. When he was in the hospital in New York he gained no weight, even after three months.
Eventually the doctors in Boston told Chenkus and Higgs that that Maverick actually did not need a transplant because he was doing so well. They said also that he was going to be able to head home within a few weeks.
The doctors did say that in the future Maverick may need to have a heart transplant, but if he did, then it should be no problem.
