article imageReview: Judi Dench amazes as 'Philomena' in new film by Stephen Frears Special

By Markos Papadatos     Nov 29, 2013 in Entertainment
Academy award-winning actress Judi Dench gives a spell-binding performance as Philomena Lee in the new film, "Philomena," which came out on November 27 in the United States.
The film was co-produced and co-written by Steve Coogan, who also stars in the motion picture as Martin Sixsmith. Philomena was directed by Stephen Frears, who was responsible for directing The Queen, which starred Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II.
It tells the heart-warming story of a woman, Philomena, who is in search of her long-lost son that she had given birth to over 50 years ago, but was forced to give up for adoption at the age of three, since at the time of his birth, she was not married. They lived together in a convent for the years they were together. Without giving too much away, her search will have ties in the United States, and Martin will be of great assistance to Philomena. What makes this movie even more compelling is that it was based on a true story.
The Verdict
In summation, Judi Dench gives one of the best performances of her career since Notes On A Scandal and Mrs. Brown. The range and depth of her complex character is incredible: there are times when she will make you laugh out loud and others, where she will break your heart. She really becomes her character, which is something very few actresses can do these days (with the exception of such acting queens as Meryl Streep, Vanessa Redgrave and Maggie Smith). Dench deserves to at least be nominated for a "Best Actress" Oscar for this remarkable performance, which is a true master class in acting.
Steve Coogan does a solid job as portraying Martin, as well as for co-writing this flawless script. Frears' direction of the film is brilliant and its cinematography is utterly fantastic. Philomena garners 5 out of 5 stars.
