article imageReview: Lady Gaga disappoints on new studio album 'Artpop' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Nov 28, 2013 in Entertainment
Pop superstar Lady Gaga released her third studio album "Artpop" on November 11 in the United States on Streamline and Interscope Records.
Although it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts, it only sold 258,000 copies during its first week, which is substantially less than her previous albums.
The first five tracks of Gaga's new album are lackluster.
I did like "Manicure," but her second single, a duet with R. Kelly "Do What U Want" is mediocre at best. It didn't even fare that well on the charts, thus peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.
I was not impressed with the title track "Artpop" nor "Swine," but I did tolerate "Donatella."
"Dope" is a ballad that contains some vituperative lyrics, and the same holds true for several other tracks, hence the "explicit" labeling.
I really liked "Gypsy," especially due to its dance vibe, and I think it would make a good choice for a future radio single. I also loved the lead single "Applause."
The Verdict
Overall, I was extremely disappointed with Lady Gaga's Artpop as a whole. I really liked her two previous albums The Fame and Born This Way, and found this CD's lead single "Applause" to be catchy and radio-friendly. I was hoping for more songs like "Bad Romance," "Hair," "Alejandro," "The Edge of Glory" and "Scheiße," but this project turned out to go an entirely different direction for the pop star. It garners 2 out of 5 stars. My suggestion for the fans would be to download the tracks that they like on iTunes, in an effort to save their money from the filler tracks.
