article imageCanada: Tom Hanks booed at CFL final

Regina - Tom Hanks may get the royal treatment in Hollywood, but the actor found himself on the receiving end of some catcalls from rabid football fans prior to Canada's coveted pigskin final.
Showing up on a TSN pre-game show leading up to the the Canadian Football League's 101st running of the Grey Cup on Sunday, Hanks made the mistake of cheering for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. After all, he was in Regina, home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Hamilton's heavily favoured opponents.
Persuaded by his friend, comic actor and Hamilton native Martin Short to show up for the game, Hanks took part in the Tiger-Cats fight chant, when he was shouted down by Roughrider fans.
"Oh, knock it off!" said Hanks in what turned out to be more of a good-natured exchange.
Later in the third quarter, Hanks was shown on the stadium Jumbotron wearing a Ti-Cats toque, which led to another chorus of boos. But the crowd instantly cheered when Hanks switched his headgear to display Roughrider green.
The arrival of Hanks, Short and their sons created quite a stir throughout the city, but didn't eclipse the intensity of the game.
However, the actor said he was enjoying the experience. "Nothing could be finer than being here in Regina for the Grey Cup," said Hanks. "That's the way I look at it."
The surpising starpower appearance didn't have an effect on the game, however, Saskatchewan handily defeated Hamilton 45-23.
