World renowned DJ Christopher Lawrence opened up about his upcoming compilation "Rush Hour: Best of 2013," which will be released worldwide on December 16 via his label, Pharmacy Music.
This collection will feature some of the best tunes on his "Rush Hour" radio show. "This radio show has been going for over five years. A year ago, I started doing a 'best of' for the year. It's anywhere from 150 tracks that I play on the show over twelve episodes, so there are a lot of really good tracks in there. It's great to go back over them and pick out the ones that were my favorites, and ones that I got a lot of response from my listeners," he said. "It was hard to narrow it down to the 17 best tracks."
Regarding his plans for the future, he revealed that he is working on his artist album. "An artist album is something that you listen to from start to finish and it does not necessarily have to be a compilation CD. It is more diverse and it can take the listener on a different type of journey than they have already been on. I am working on a new track called 'Libra' and that is my latest single," he explained. "I have a new track that is coming out in December and that's called 'The Dark,' so I've been ramping up my releases."
Throughout his lengthy career in electronic dance music, Lawrence was the recipient of the "Best American DJ" award by the IDMA (International Dance Music Awards), as well as "Best American DJ" by DJ Times.
A trance pioneer who emerged as a global leader at the same time as such electronic dance music producers as Paul van Dyk and Paul Oakenfold, Lawrence has stayed true to underground trance scene throughout a career that has spanned 19 years. He also ranked No. 4 in DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJ poll in 2006. "This is my 19th year. I am excited about that. I don't know if I am going to have a reunion for my 20th year. I have to plan something around that," he said with a laugh.
Each day, Lawrence is motivated by the music that he finds, whether somebody sends him an amazing promo in an e-mail, or by discovering something incredible online. "That is what inspires me and that is what has gotten me into this in the first place. The fact that I can still be inspired by the music is exciting and it's a testimony to the type of music that it's always evolving," the veteran trance producer said.
On August 10, 2012, Lawrence performed at Europa Club in Brooklyn, New York. "That was fantastic," he exclaimed. "It was a really good party. It was an opportunity in New York to play psychedelic trance which is my favorite type of music. It was a good night because the other DJs were playing psychedelic trance as well and it was a good crowd that showed up. New York and Los Angeles are recognized capitals around the world for dance music centers, but psychedelic trance is not well-represented in Los Angeles or New York or any major cities in the United States. It's great to be able to push that sound and to find an audience for that music in the major cities," he said.
