Tarragona - Officers with the National Police in Tarragona, Spain have dismantled a massive cocaine lab, capable of producing around 20 kilos of the drug weekly. This is the largest laboratory ever found in Spain.
As reported by the National Police on their official website (in Spanish), police have arrested 12 drug traffickers who were using the premises under the cover of being a “souvenir manufacturing company.”
The lab was located in a farmhouse in a rural area of Vila-Seca, out of the way of anyone who would notice the emission of gases from the chemical processes involved in the manufacture of cocaine.
As well as the 12 arrests, police have seized 22 kilos of cocaine, two vehicles and around 3,500 gallons of the chemicals required to extract the drug. The chemicals were concealed in various types of containers, including soda and other household bottles.

Oximity (Spanish language) said that the 12 detainees were reportedly part of a highly specialized organization which offers technical assistance to other drug gangs in Spain.
Their first task in the laboratory was to disguise the chemicals used in the process in various types of more innocent containers, including biodiesel or soda bottles. Secondly, the traffickers made the cocaine itself and lastly the drug was cut to increase the amount of the product, leading to higher revenues from the sale.

Their final product was individual bricks of cocaine, each weighing one kilogram.
According to officials, the organization stored around four tons of the specific chemicals needed for the process in the house in Tarragona and also used housing and rented storage in Barcelona for more. It is estimated that, using the tools, equipment and chemicals seized this week, the detainees had the capability of producing 20 kilograms of cocaine a week, or more than a ton of cocaine a year.
The arrest took months of research and investigation but police were finally successful in arresting the 12 members of the drug gang.

Spanish police are having a lot of success with arresting drug traffickers, as Digital Journal reported back in August on the raid in Spain's Murcia region by Civil Guard and local police officers, which uncovered the largest-ever seizure of marijuana. Around 14,000 plants and over three tonnes of the drug were seized and five men arrested.
Shortly before this, Spain's National Police busted and dismantled a sophisticated laboratory with 900 marijuana plants in Andújar, Jaén province in southern Spain.
