Montreal’s experimental art summit will showcase the globe’s most innovative audio and video works from VJ-ing to creating high-tech sensory atmospheres in public spaces.
MUTEK IMG, which takes place Nov. 21-23 at the PHI Centre in Montreal, offers a healthy international cross-section of cutting-edge digital artists, several of them Canadian.
One participant looking forward to taking part in the event is Edmonton-based artist Gary James Joynes, better known globally as Clinker.
"MUTEK is one of the most important festivals in world for the presentation and advancement of electronic music, experimental sound and AV art," said Joynes, who will be at the summit, showcasing his work Peregrination, a project already highly-lauded for adding visual shapes to sound.
"They are uncompromising in the presentation of art and sound and the quality of their audio and video is always state-of-the art."
This year marks the fifth time Joynes has taken part in the event. And while he's itching to find out how his work will pan out in front of an audience hungering for new ideas in digital art, he's especially looking forward to the workshops and showcases.
Granted, topics like mutations in audio-visual creation and new media-enhanced scenegraphy might seem arcane to the average spectator. But considering MUTEK's 14-year track record of exposing the public to digital art breakthroughs, it's a safe bet that many of these endeavours will eventually be adopted by more mainstream genres, electronic dance music in particular.
"There is also an intensely packed symposium of daily workshops and artist talks and I already know I am going to come back here having learned a whole lot more about my own practice," said Joynes. "I always come home from there with a new level of inspiration, new friends and inevitably new opportunities for my work to grow and travel."
