article imageBeer that tastes like meat—The Butcher from Bluejacket Brewery

By Lesley Lanir     Nov 20, 2013 in Food
Washington - Bluejacket Brewery have brewed a beer, 'The Butcher,' that tastes like the hot-dog delicacy found in the 'half-smoke' sandwich. This meaty, dark lager is the initiative of Greg Engert, one of the top U.S. beer experts.
In case you don't feel like eating at lunch-time or can't afford a pint and a sandwich or just feel like something with a bit more body, Greg Engert, the James Beard Award-nominated beer director, has produced the drink for you, 'The Butcher' - a meat-flavoured beer.
The idea for 'The Butcher,' brewed at Bluejacket, "the brewery that holds no boundaries," came while the Bluejacket director, Engert, was enjoying a Washington DC delicacy, the half-smoke. The main ingredient of this sandwich is a spicy sausage, so Engert decided he wanted to reproduce the flavour of this local hot-dog in a glass of beer.
To perfect the taste, Engert used different proportions of smoked grains together with sea salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, white cardamom, mustard seed, and nutmeg, Finally, the beer expert came up with an "outstanding" dark lager that is said to be "sweet and bready like a classic German doppelbock, but finishes with a spicy, smoked meat note."
Apparently, The Butcher is a "7-percent ABV dopplebock unlike any you’ve ever had and better than most."
