The Washington Post Company, having sold the Washington Post newspaper and digital concern to Amazon's Jeff Bezos, announced its new name on Monday.
The Washington Post Company is now Graham Holdings Company. The new name was announced in a press release issued on Monday morning.
The Graham family has long held a controlling stake in the Washington Post Company, and the new name reflects the many assets the holding company still maintains.
"The Company owns Kaplan, a leading global provider of educational services to individuals, schools and businesses, with programs that include higher education, test preparation, language instruction and professional training; Post–Newsweek Stations: WDIV–Detroit (NBC), KPRC–Houston (NBC), WPLG–Miami (ABC), WKMG–Orlando (CBS), KSAT–San Antonio (ABC) and WJXT–Jacksonville (independent); Cable ONE, headquartered in Phoenix, AZ, serving small-city subscribers in 19 midwestern, western and southern states, providing digital video, Internet and phone service to homes and businesses; The Slate Group (Slate, Slate V, theRoot and Foreign Policy); Social Code, a leading social marketing solutions partner dedicated to driving cross-platform ROI; Celtic Healthcare, a provider of home healthcare and hospice services; and Forney Corporation, a global supplier of products and systems that control and monitor combustion processes in electric utility and industrial applications," the corporate press release stated.
Having closed its sale of the Washington Post newspaper and digital property to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on October 1, 2013, the now-named Graham Holdings Company existed as a publicly traded firm without an identity.
"The change will take effect on Friday, November 29," Don Graham, CEO of Graham Holdings Company wrote in a letter to company employees. "On that day we will also change our ticker symbol to GHC on the New York Stock Exchange."
