A private and non-televised event kicked off the Oscar season as the Governors Awards were handed out in Hollywood Nov. 16.
But that doesn't mean it was meant to be secret. Honorary Awards were presented to Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin and Piero Tosi. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was given to Angelina Jolie.
The 5th Annual Governors Awards were held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center, the site of the Oscars. They used to be awarded in a short segment during the Oscar telecast but were taken out and given a night of their own, kicking off the Oscar season.
“The Governors Awards pay tribute to individuals who’ve made indelible contributions in their respective fields,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, said when the award winners were announced back in September.
Here is a roundup of video from the night's event.
It was a night to reflect and remember and honor the selected few. During the night, according to the feed from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the evening came to a close after Lansburg was honored. Her long career is one of legend. She quipped: "I must tell you — I had coffee on the lot with Clark Gable. That's as far as it went."
Her award was presented by Robert Osborne who said: "No one deserves this golden boy more than you. Here's your Academy Award - at last." And she replied: "What an incredible moment."
Martin's award was presented by Tom Hanks. He noted: "To understand tonight that the work over the decades has at least meant something to someone, is especially satisfying," Martin said. he went on: "I knew I wasn't going to make it through this speech tonight. I read it to my dog this morning and wept."
Being honored for her work as a humanitarian, Jolie, too was overwhelmed. "I will do the best I can with my life to be of use," she said during her speech. She also recognized a truth of the evening as well: "We are all, every one in this room, so fortunate."
Jolie has "depicted the horrors of war and used her art to illuminate justice issues and make positive change in the world, said George Lucas while honored her from the podium.
Claudia Cardinale took the stage to accept on Tosi's behalf.
According to the Academy, the definitions of the awards are: The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, is given “to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.
