The boys of One Direction, the world-conquering mega pop boy band, are set to gatecrash the birthday celebrations of the BBC’s flagship science-fiction television drama series, “Doctor Who,” it has been revealed.
Last week, BBC Three announced that it had commissioned Doctor Who Live: The Afterparty, a full-on party to be aired live on TV immediately after the UK broadcast of the eagerly anticipated Doctor Who special, the 75-minute film, The Day of the Doctor.
One Direction will also be joining the celebrations, the BBC reveals, gate-crashing the show live from LA, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, presumably there to sing “Happy Birthday” to the Doctor.
The Controller of BBC Three, Zai Bennett — the man who caused upset in 2011, to fans and programme-makers alike, for cancelling Doctor Who Confidential, the behind-the-scenes documentary series that had accompanied the parent show since 2005 — says of his new commission: “The 50th anniversary is going to be a huge party for Doctor Who and we’re delighted that BBC Three will be able to give the fans all the backstage access to the stars at the hottest ticket in town.”
Further details have now been released for Doctor Who Live: The Afterparty, which will be held at London’s South Bank. Proceedings will be moderated by Zoe Ball — host of the first-ever Doctor Who Live, back in August — and Rick Edwards (That Paralympic Show). Among the guests on hand will be outgoing Doctor Matt Smith, as well as, reports Doctor Who News, “A host of previous Doctors and their time-travelling companions.”
From around the globe, fans of the science-fiction series will also be heavily involved, asked to give their verdict on the anniversary special just shown in 75 countries world wide!
Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor will be broadcast in just over a week’s time, on Saturday, 23 November 2013, at 7.50 p.m. GMT. Doctor Who Live: The Afterparty will follow from 9.05 p.m. GMT.
