article imageOp-Ed: Ethanol production created environmental disaster

By Larry Clifton     Nov 12, 2013 in Environment
How the environmentalists sang its praises. All kneel to ethanol, the corn-based green fuel destined to slow global warming.
Never mind that the Earth’s surface temperatures have been cooling for years despite Al Gore and his political ilk burning more jet fuel than the USAF.
Okay, the latter is a slight exaggeration, but when you add the deadly cigarette pollution he and his family created through growing and selling tobacco, the environmental damage Gore has wrought is truly significant.
Enter President Barack Obama. Though President Bush initiated the era of ethanol-based mandates for fuel products, Obama greatly expanded it while on the other hand he baited companies to install tens of thousands of ugly giant fans that kill birds and blight the landscape. Another loss for taxpayers occurred when he bankrolled doomed solar companies like Solyndra.
Meanwhile, many two-faced limousine-liberal politicians who worship in the political winds of the giant fans quietly complained that installing such monstrous wind farms would obstruct their Cape Cod views.
However this is the story of ethanol, that mass destroyer of small engines that environmentalists pushed as the penicillin for ills of carbon pollution.
Like government-mandated health care, ethanol turned out to be more of a problem than a solution. As subsidized cornfields sprang up to produce corn for ethanol, the price of corn, a staple of human sustenance, soared. However increasing poverty is the real legacy of the current administration so we’ll move along.
Ethanol, it turns out, is a significant source of environmental ruin across the United States, as opposed to the stated goals of ethanol-worshipping greenies.
From the brown scars of exposed soils in southern Iowa to the polluted streams dumping fertilizer into drinking water, ethanol is right up there with strip mining when it comes to polluting the Earth. The difference is, ethanol was sold as an answer to pollution. It has very little reason to be produced beyond the premise of environmental causes promoted by greenies.
The Obamacare of environmentalism, ethanol mandates have greatly harmed our environment and the problem is far worse than politicians and the U.S. government reports.
For example, as subsidies and tax breaks and mandates created an agricultural boom for corn farmers, such crops wiped out millions of acres of conservation land, polluted our drinking water and destroyed ecosystems and habitat, according to an Associated Press investigation.
Ethanol, the same demon that shakes apart small engines and causes automobiles to perform less efficiently, is also part of a rising environmental disaster. For a snapshot of environmental ruin, consider that “five million acres of land set aside for conservation — more than Yellowstone, Everglades and Yosemite National Parks combined — have vanished on Obama's watch,” according to the investigation.
The environmental devastation caused by ethanol production in the U.S. is an inconvenient truth to the administration and many so-called environmentalists.
