In the 10-round non-title fight, Donaire was the dominant fighter in the early rounds, scoring hard left and right combinations but Darchinyan started finding his target beginning with round four when he connected two hard left punches that stunned Donaire.
Darchinyan's domination continued in round five when he connected two successive left power punches staggering Donaire seconds before the end of the fifth round.
Donaire started to take the lead beginning round six when he caught Darchinyan with a right power punch in the middle of the round.
In the seventh round Donaire was able to connect with left and right combinations but he was not throwing more punches to neutralize Darchinyan's relentless assault.
As early as the seventh round Donaire was warned by his corner that he was behind in the scoring and it was necessary for him to be more aggressive by throwing more punches.
Donaire did what his corner wanted and on the ninth round he caught Darchinyan with a power left hook sending the Armenian down to his knees.
Darchinyan beat the 10-count by the referee but his legs were visibly wobbly as Donaire landed a series of power shots, forcing Darchinyan to cling on the corner ropes where Donaire threw more telling blows that prompted the referee to stop the fight.
Donaire was awarded a TKO win at th 2:06 mark of the ninth round.
