A trailer for the upcoming 50th-anniversary of Doctor Who has been leaked online ahead of its British television premiere.
Such is the buzz surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who that every trailer associated with the show is receiving as much coverage as an actual episode.
Three weeks ago, the BBC premiered a trailer charting 50 years of its iconic science-fiction series and, despite it running to just 61 seconds, it has been dissected minutely and watched millions of times on the Internet.
And its not just fans who are obsessing. The trailer — which featured all 11 Doctors (including the First Doctor as he appeared in 1963, in full colour for the very first time) and a host of other bite-sized references from the show’s 50-year history— was reviewed by national newspapers and other mainstream publications, as they would any full-length programme.
So, it’s unsurprising that tonight’s planned TV premiere of a trailer showing footage from the anniversary adventure itself — The Day of the Doctor — has generated even more anticipation and speculation.
Time Leak
Somehow, a 14-second clip (below) of the 41-second trailer (above), Metro reports, was leaked online on Friday evening, leading the BBC to release the full trailer on the Internet earlier today.
In it, the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors — as played by David Tennant and Matt Smith — are seen interacting with each other for the first time; while we’re also treated to the appearance of John Hurt’s mysterious “Other” Doctor, two of the Doctor’s companions, Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Colman) and the Doctor’s one-time wife, Queen Elizabeth I (Joanna Page)!
Other images include what appears to be the Doctor’s homeworld, Gallifrey, in flames, London’s National Gallery and a young woman dressed up as Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, complete with his iconic multi-coloured scarf.
Not represented here, but already confirmed as appearing in the special, are the Doctor’s arch-enemies, the Daleks and another of his adversaries, the Zygons, who haven’t been seen in the TV series since the mid-1970s.
Unconfirmed is a rumour earlier this year that another former incarnation of the Doctor would be appearing, too, although Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy is on record as saying that none of the pre-2005 Doctors were involved in the 50th-anniversary adventure.
The new Doctor Who trailer will receive its British TV premiere this evening (Saturday, 9 November 2013) on BBC One, at approximately 8 p.m. — between Strictly Come Dancing and Atlantis.
The BBC has also revealed that a second trailer will be broadcast on BBC One, sometime tomorrow evening (Sunday, 10 November 2013).
Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor will air in the UK in two weeks’ time — on Saturday, 23 November 2013, on BBC One — as well as in 75 other countries on that day and in selected cinemas around the world.
