Greek coastguards have intercepted and detained a ship laden with 20,000 Kalashnikovs and a large amount of explosives in Greek waters. The cargo ship has been escorted to Rhodes port.
As coastguards detected the cargo ship Nourm suspicions were raised as the Sierra Leone flagged vessel has been linked to smuggling. Defence Net reported the ship attempted to sail towards the Turkish coast to avoid interception.
According to the Maritime Executive the ship had sailed from the Ukrainian port of Nikolaev and documentation showed it was heading to Libya. However the Turkish captain claimed the ship's destination was the Turkish port of Iskendern.
The Voice of Russia reports that there is evidence the weapons cargo was due to be split between Libya and Syria.
