Borno - Gunmen in north-eastern Nigeria have killed at least 30 members of a wedding party including the groom. The attack happened in a very dangerous part of Borno, where there has been an ongoing Islamist insurgency.
The area is notorious for attacks by extremist Muslim group Boko Haram, RT reports.
The attack happened Saturday as the wedding party was returning to the capital city of Maiduguri after the ceremony in Michika in Adamawa State.
Adamawa state spokesman Ahmad Sajoh said the group was driving home when they were attacked on the highway, which runs along forests in which Boko Haram members are known to hide out in, AlJazeera reports.
A government spokesman said Islamic fighters are suspected of carrying out the attack.
"It was a gory scene," said a driver, who said he had seen bodies on the highway.
"All the victims were brutally murdered by the attackers. My passengers and I were visibly shocked when we met the dead bodies lying by the highway," he added.
Ahmad Sajoh said the bride and groom had participated in the Muslim wedding ritual of fatiha, RT reports.
The groom, identified by his wedding robes, is among the dead.
The fate of the bride and her family is not known at this time, BBC News reports.
Boko Haram has been fighting since 2009 for the creation of an Islamic state. Violent attacks are common in the north-eastern part of Nigeria where the army has been trying to end an insurgency by Boko Haram, AlJazeera reports.
Last week, Boko Haram fighters attacked the city of Damaturu, burning police and military buildings, BBC News reports.
