Havana - Among the first aspects that surprise visitors to Cuba is the impressive quantity of vintage cars driven on the streets, most of them in excellent condition. Many of them are of American origin, particularly Ford and Chevrolet 1940s and 1950s models.
It is said that about 60,000 American-built cars from the decades of the 40s and 50s are still in full use on the island, and for many people the old restored car is their only means of transportation. Also many of them have been dedicated to taxi service allowing visitors to move between different parts of the Cuban capital in a style that is only available to wealthy classic car collectors.
Following the triumph of the revolution in 1959, the U.S. government began in 1962 an economic and commercial embargo on Cuba. For over half a century the people of Cuba have resisted the economic blockade while developing in many respects, especially in education, health and biotechnology. However, given financial limitations and the impossibility of acquiring new vehicles, the renewal of car models in Cuba stopped in time.
Part of the history of Cuba and Cubans perseverance are shown in their old cars.
