Woman killed by rubbish compressor in Jaén, Spain

By Anne Sewell     Nov 2, 2013 in World
A 62-year-old unemployed woman named Joaquina was searching for scrap metal on a rubbish dump with her two sons, when she was accidentally crushed and killed by a rubbish compressor.
She was killed in the municipal landfill in Jaén in southern Spain.
According to Diario Jaén (Spanish language) an ambulance was called to the scene for the woman, but it is thought that she was killed instantly.
After witnessing the incident, the two sons and another man, thought to be her nephew, then assaulted the driver of the vehicle, leaving him badly beaten.
Police intervened and the driver was transferred to a hospital in Jaen under police protection, where his condition is reportedly stable.
Police will be taking a statement from the driver about the incident, which is thought to have been accidental.
Public access to landfills in Spain is forbidden. However, the economic crisis is forcing more and more local people to enter the sites, hoping to find valuable materials to sell, in order to put food on the table.
Kaos en la Red (in Spanish) quoted a deputy minister in the area, Juan Lillo, saying that there were several people around a truck that was unloading when the incident occurred.
Reportedly workers at the dump have been unhappy about security there for some time.
