article imageBritney Spears' music thwarts Somali pirates

By Kevin Fitzgerald     Oct 29, 2013 in Odd News
Mogadishu - British tanker crews based off the coast of Somalia have recently begun blasting the music of pop star Britney Spears as a way to repel Somali pirates.
UPI reports that the pirates are particularly put off by the Spears' classics "Baby One More Time" and "Oops! I Did It Again".
According to UT San Diego, giant external audio speakers on the ships are turned out so that the music can be blasted at would-be attackers.
British Merchant Navy officer Rachel Owen stated:
"Her songs were chosen by (our) security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most. These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect."
According to the New York Post, Owens also stated that the recent tactic has proven to be so effective that crew members aboard these ships have rarely had to resort to using guns to combat pirates.
Somali pirates are frequently known to attack ships and take crew members hostage in hopes of getting a large ransom.
