Winter Garden - One shot was fired during a robbery of a Winter Garden, Florida gas station. The clerk did not realize he had been hit until he pulled out his cellphone and found a bullet embedded in it.
According to the Winter Garden Police Department, a man walked into a gas station around 4:45 a.m. yesterday. After asking a clerk to help him find a beverage, he pulled out a gun and ordered the clerk to open the safe. The clerk couldn't manage to get it open.
A second clerk then attempted to open the safe but failed as well. At that point, the robber began to leave the station. But before he did, he fired one shot at one of the clerks. The shot was fired in the area of the victim's abdomen.
The clerk did not realize he had been hit. It was only when he was being interviewed by police that he knew something was wrong. Lt. Scott Allen said , "The clerk said, 'I feel like my chest hurts.' That's when medical personnel realized the guy had actually shot at him, hit him, and the cellphone had stopped his bullet."
When the clerk removed the phone from his shirt pocket, the screen had been shattered and the bullet was lodged in it.
Allen added, "I've seen individuals get shot with low-caliber handguns and I've seen it be life ending. So for this gentleman to be as lucky as he is, it's a good day for us."
The clerk was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was quickly released. The second clerk was not injured.
