Penzance - The British composer George Lloyd was born in 1913. His opera "Iernin" has been performed this year for the first time since 1935.
And will be performed in Penzance on November 1 & 2 at St. John's Hall. George Walter Selwyn Lloyd was born June 28, 1913 at St. Ives, Cornwall, less than 9 miles as the crow flies from Penzance, where Iernin will be performed at the beginning of next month. He died in 1998 shortly after completing his last great work, a requiem for Diana Princess of Wales.
If you want to learn more about him, there is a website devoted to his life and work run by The George Lloyd Society. As you will see from this, he left a fair body of work. On June 28 this year, what would have been the composer's 100th birthday, the British Library acquired all his autograph music, ie manuscripts written in his own hand.
His opera Iernin has a libretto by William A. C. Lloyd, who was none other than George Lloyd's father - not to be confused with Lloyd George knew my father. You can find some background to the opera on the Surrey Opera website.
