article imageReview: Eric Church is not messing around with 'The Outsiders'

By Andrew Ellis     Oct 27, 2013 in Entertainment
Fans were teased with a mysterious video last week. Then it was also announced that Eric Church's new single, "The Outsiders," would be released to both radio and online October 22nd.
With "The Outsiders," it seems that Church hasn't just released the first single from his new album. It feels like something more.
The beginning of the song tells you right away it's a Church song with a few chords being played quietly from an electric guitar. Then Church comes in and starts to do what some may calling rapping with the lyrics, "They're the in crowd, we're the other ones/it's a different kind of cloth that we're cut from." After rapping a few more lines he sings the line "That's who we are," and a few seconds later the chorus comes in with his full rocking band along with Church singing with the same kind of passion he's become known for.
The song alternates between the rapping and singing for its entirety, but that's not a bad thing. It's got that same hard-rocking country sound that Church has become known for since he released "Sinners Like Me," and it seems as though he might told the band to turn the volume up a couple notches.
The only real criticism of the song is that after around 3:05 the singing stops, and it breaks into kind of speedy jam that most would leave for the live show. It's not bad, but it sounds as if it was just meant for that band to show off what they can do.
The song feels like more than just a song. It feels as if he's trying to signal the start of some sort of movement. It's like he's getting ready for something that will put his permanent stamp on the world of country music. If his fans have anything to say about, then this movement will not go unnoticed.
