By Mathew Wace Peck     Oct 26, 2013 in Entertainment
With the second season of BBC America’s “Orphan Black” now having commenced filming, three additional cast members have been announced.
Season 1 of the conspiracy-clone thriller – which stars Tatiana Maslany (Parks and Recreation) – has received critical acclaim in the US and UK.
Airlock Alpha reports that, for season 2 – which entered production this week – Maslany will be joined by three new members of the cast: Michiel Huisman (Treme) will play Cal Morrison, Peter Outerbridge (ReGenesis) the role of Henrik “Hank” Johanssen and Ari Millen (Nikita) has been cast as Mark.
According to BBC America, Morrison is “a rugged, resourceful outdoorsman with surprising emotional depth and a sixth sense about people and situations”; while Johanssen is “a mercurial modern-day cowboy [who] leads a flock of followers that have broken away from the old-world Prolethean brotherhood”. Mark, meanwhile, is “a cunning predator with a dark edge […] utterly devoted to Johanssen, who took him in and built him into a true believer in the cause”.

Orphan Black, which centres around Maslany playing several physically identical clones, deals with complex issues like identity and the ethics of cloning. According to the show’s producers, the second season hits the ground running, “with Sarah (played by Maslany) in a desperate race to find her missing daughter, Kira, (Skyler Wexler). Her scorched-earth tactics spark a war with a pro-clone, Rachel (also played by Maslany), dividing and imperiling all the clones”.
Meanwhile, a teaser for the ongoing storyline asks, “As Sarah discovers more about her past, mysterious newcomers appear, but can they be trusted?”
Generally, the series has received favourable reviews and Maslany universal acclaim for her performance as the various clones. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter called her performance “fantastic”.
However, the 28-year-old failed to garner an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, which was widely viewed as a snub by many critics.
