article imageNorwegian hunter misses elk, hits man on toilet instead

By Anne Sewell     Oct 26, 2013 in World
A 70-year-old man was doing what comes naturally in the bathroom of his wooden country cabin, when a stray bullet came right through the wall and hit him in his abdomen. Seems a hunter had missed the elk he was after.
The man was apparently visiting the cabin with his wife, to shut it up for the winter. He was in the toilet when the incident occurred.
The seriously-injured man was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the nearby town of Ullevål, south east of Oslo.
Paul Horne of the local police told VG (in Norwegian), "It was a hunting rifle with powerful ammunition, and the man was shot in the abdomen, so the injury is serious."
On Thursday night, police said that the man's condition was serious, but stable.
According to Horne, the hunter, who has been taken in for questioning, loosed off the round a mere 100 meters from the cabin, aiming to hit an elk, adding that the hunter who fired the shots was not sufficiently vigiliant to realize the house was in the background.
NRK (Norwegian language) reported that the victim's wife has said that she does not bear a grudge against the hunter, who was part of a hunting party.
Apparently the rest of the hunting party were questioned on Friday and police will also interview the man who was shot and his wife.
