Syrian state television has announced the death of the leader of the Al-Qaeda affiliated group in Syria, the Nusra Front.
According to Syrian authorities, Abu Mohammad al-Golani, the head of the organisation, was killed in an operation that took place in the northwestern province of Latakia.
The Nusra Front have been one of the most highly organised and effective rebel group in Syria, controlling territory in both the north and east of Syria. The Jihadi group is also composed of several foreign fighters within its ranks.
Earlier this year, the leader of the Nusra Front pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, with the U.S. government already designating the group as a terrorist organisation, calling it an arm of Al-Qaeda.
In another blow to rebel fighters, Syrian troops also killed 40 rebels in the Damascus suburbs, as the Syrian army continues to push against rebels in an effort to secure the area.
