article image'I Ham': Naked Parma ham advert causes outrage in Capri, Italy

By Anne Sewell     Oct 24, 2013 in Food
Capri - An advertisement billboard is causing an upset on the Italian island of Capri. It shows a couple of slices of the famous Parma ham placed strategically on the rump of a naked woman.
Above the image on the advertising poster is the slogan, "I Ham." as well as a caption saying that the ham can be found "in the best restaurants in Capri".
As photos of the billboard, located in the marina on Capri, started doing the rounds on the social networks, commenters were outraged, saying that the Parma-based company, Onesto Ghirardi, is "degrading women". One commenter stated that “a woman’s body is not a piece of meat”.
A local councilor in Capri, Anita de Pascale, reportedly asked the mayor to immediately remove the billboard.
She told La Repubblica newspaper (in Italian), “The image is detrimental to the dignity of women,” adding that it was especially bad to misuse a woman's body for advertising purposes.
However, authorities on Parma do not want to intervene. The owner of the billboard, when questioned by La Repubblica Parma, said they did not want to make any statement.
