article imageOp-Ed: Kanye West selling confederate flag t-shirts on 'Yeezus' tour

By Layne Weiss     Oct 22, 2013 in Entertainment
Seattle - So, if anything Kanye West did shocked us anymore, we might be surprised to learn he's selling merchandise with the United States Confederate Flag on it. Am I shocked? Appalled? Nope.
When I saw the headlines, I was thinking maybe I should go back to my college "New South" class where I learned about the REAL Civil War, where I wrote a 40 page honors paper about the true of meaning of the Confederate Flag. I saw this tweet care of the Huff Post over the fashion obsessed rapper's actions."The confederate flag is a symbol of violence & hatred against black people & ain't nothing cool about Kanye trying to flip it." I thought "this person is misinformed and I'm gonna turn to that college paper and tell him why. I'm gonna cite the ACLU and say it's JUST a symbol and not allowing Kanye to sell it on his t-shirts is a violation of his civil liberties..." But then I thought, "You know what, it's Kanye!"
Recently, Jonathan Capehart wrote in The Washington Post that the Confederate Flag was like the Swastika. Originally, The Swastika, which comes from the word svastika, was a term affirming "the positive values of life." The Nazis took it and made it something evil. Just like the Confederate Flag wasn't always racist or evil. Like the Civil War wasn't really just about slaves. You get me...! But anyway, onto the fashion!!
The t-shirts were designed by artist Wes Lang, and were revealed Saturday night in Seattle, the first stop on the "Yeezus" tour.
Kanye has not explained his reasons for using the flag. Maybe it has something to do with the "New Slaves..." Maybe it's just fashion forward...he likes to get people talking! His music should do that, but he likes to take it a step further! After all, he just brought a Jesus look alike to sing with him on tour. Yeezus. Jesus...yeah.
Anyway, you can scroll down for some of the t-shirt photos here. I'm not trying to imply the flag isn't an offensive symbol. I realize that over time it has come to mean something far different than what was intended when it was originally created. But I think we must also realize that we're talking about KANYE WEST! Again, the man sang with "Jesus" on stage! Nothing he does should surprise us.
