Madrid - Spain's police have caught up with 17 suspects, part of one of the country's biggest-ever jewelry heists. The criminals stole luxury watches worth €23 million ($31 million) from a store in Serrano Street in Madrid.
The robbery happened in December 2012 and has been reportedly been dubbed by some authorities as being the "robbery of the century."
The criminals used sophisticated laser equipment to break into the luxury watch store in Madrid in broad daylight and managed to steal 1,710 watches without setting off any alarms.
Spain's La Vanguardia newspaper reported on Thursday that police have now recovered 300 of the stolen timepieces, worth around €270,000 ($369,176).
Working together with Interpol, Spanish authorities have also managed to locate more of the stolen watches in Shanghai in China, where they are apparently being traded on the black market.
17 suspects have been detained in total by police, which includes the actual thieves, along with their middlemen, and others who received the stolen merchandise.
Of the men arrested, one is a well-known thief with a history of robberies on Madrid's so-called 'Mile of Gold'. Dubbed "the troll", the man is considered the chief suspect according to police.
During investigations into the case, police have also turned up jewels, drugs, weapons and also the tools used in various robberies, including oxy-fuel cutters.
A statement by the National Police (Spanish language) advises that the criminals had apparently enjoyed holidays in luxury developments in Ibiza and on the Moroccan coast, had a high standard of living, and rented all types of pleasure craft while posing as affluent people. They might find their new accommodations a bit lacking in luxury.
