Skokie - Chicago woman, Cassandra Feuerstein, has filed a lawsuit in federal court against Skokie, Illinois and one of its officers, Michael Hart, after an incident in which she was pushed inside a of cell.
The lawsuit states that the incident required Feuerstein to undergo facial reconstructive surgery. Some of the incident was captured on the video below. Feuerstein’s attorney said that the video speaks for itself and that the officer’s actions were unjustified. She seeks unspecified damages.
Feuerstein also alleges that the officer filed a false report claiming she resisted. She was taken out of the cell for a mug shot.
During a phone call a dispatcher referred Digital Journal to the statement issued by Skokie Police on their website. The call then disconnected. The statement on the
Skokie Police Department Facebook page reads
The Village of Skokie expresses deep concern for Ms. Cassandra Feuerstein's injuries that occurred at the Skokie Police Station earlier this year. Officer Michael Hart has been on station duty and has no contact with the public. Both the Village of Skokie and the Cook County State's Attorney have ongoing investigations pending that began when the incident occurred. Those being interviewed in the investigations include the numerous other Skokie police officers, both male and female, who were present at the time and treated Ms. Feuerstein with professionalism and respect. The Village of Skokie values the Skokie Police Department's high professional standards and reputation and is deeply concerned about this isolated incident. When the investigations have concluded they will be released to the public and further steps will be taken as necessary. The Village of Skokie is committed to reaching a full resolution in this matter.

The comments below the statement express outrage at what many see as a lax response to the incident. Some are furious that Hart is still employed with the department, and many are calling for Michael Hart’s arrest, pointing out that if a similar circumstance occurred by a non-police officer, they would find themselves in jail.
There are more questions than answers in light of Skokie’s unwillingness to respond to direct questions.
At the 0:35 second mark in the video, Feuerstein is in the threshold of the cell and does not appear to be resisting. She is then launched face-first into a concrete slab that is typically covered by the thin mattress, which can be seen folded at the foot of the slab. The video shows other officers rendering first aid. Viewer discretion is advised.
After viewing the video, citizen Ray Parker said
The brutality and absolute lack of empathy I saw perpetrated by this police officer seems to have become a common occurrence in modern society. The police have adopted a mentality that every citizen is a potential criminal and is to be treated as such until proven otherwise. Serious reform is needed. It seems the police have become an enemy to the people. My hope is that this much needed change will occur soon. I know I am doing everything in my power to further this message. I hope everyone is.
