article imageAlexander Skarsgård reveals the naked truth behind ‘The East' Special

By Earl Dittman     Oct 10, 2013 in Entertainment
The ‘True Blood’ star has graduated to leading man status with his recent big screen forays. Skarsgård bares all in this discussion about the making of ‘The East,’ choosing acting roles, his thoughts on nudity and becoming the King of the Jungle.
For Alexander Skarsgård, 2013 has proven to be the most energizing and gratifying year of the blonde, 6' 4" Swedish actor's career. In addition to capping off his sixth season as the bloodsucking vampire Eric Northam on True Blood – with one of the most talked about sequences ever filmed for the hit cable series – the 38-year-old sex symbol also scored with critics and fans with two highly-acclaimed big screen appearances. This spring, Skarsgård won rave reviews for his sensitive portrayal of Lincoln – a bartender who begins to willingly care for the six-year-old daughter of an aging rock star (Julianne Moore) – in director Scott McGehee's contemporary reimagining of the Henry James novel What Maisie Knew.

In this past summer's release of the provocative espionage thriller The East, Skarsgård validated his status as a motion picture leading man with a stunning performance as a homegrown American anarchist in the intense Zal Batmanglij-directed film. "I feel incredibly fortunate and excited about the work I've gotten to do, especially recently," admits the refreshingly candid and affable Alex, dressed in a pair of jeans and a simple t-shirt. "It's great when you get to play all these great, diverse characters, but it's even more satisfying when people respond to them in a personal way."

Helmed and co-written by Zal Batmanglij (Sound Of My Voice, The Recordist), The East tells the story of a former FBI agent, Sarah Moss (co-writer Brit Marling), who is hired by an elite private intelligence firm that protects major corporate clients. Sarah's first assignment is to go undercover to infiltrate The East, an underground activist collective seeking justice against major corporations guilty of covering up criminal activity. After ingratiating herself within the group, Sarah begins to join them on their "jams" (incidents of criminal ecological activism). However, as her marriage begins to fall apart and after living closely with the intensely committed members of The East, Sarah finds herself torn between her two worlds. She quickly begins to connect with Izzy (Ellen Page) and the rest of the group that make up The East. After beginning an intimate relationship with The East's charismatic lead anarchist, Benji (Skarsgård), Sarah begins to question the moral underpinnings of her undercover duty and begins to awaken to the moral contradictions of her personal life.
Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij based the screenplay for The East on their combined experiences during the summer of 2009, when the couple practiced "freeganism" and joined an anarchist collective. Even before putting down the script, Skarsgård confesses he immediately felt emotionally drawn to the material. "I was blown away with the screenplay," he admits. "It's such an important story told in a way that is not preachy or it didn't seem like Zal and Brit were trying to shove their opinion down my throat. It just made me think. It asked a lot of questions, but it didn't seem to point out, 'These are the bad guys and these are the good guys.' It was a complicated, like life is. It made me think a lot about responsibility and dilemma of 'How far you are willing to go?' It asks, 'Are you justified in killing someone for the cause? Is it okay kidnapping someone or hurting someone for what you believe? Where do you draw the line?' I wanted to explore the answers.
"Also, what made The East even more compelling for me to do was meeting Zal and Brit," Alex adds. "I didn't even know of them. I hadn't seen their work, but I thought it was a fantastic story. I was really excited to be a part of it. When you meet them in person, they are just amazing people with fantastic energy. So, I just got really excited about the opportunity to work with them."

Filled with intrigue, action and suspense, The East also focuses on the riveting, open and very intimate relationship between the collective's members. According to Alex, the closeness between the film’s characters spilled over into real life. “All of us in the cast became this off-screen group of best friends, as well – not that we got together and went around and killed kidnapped victims," he laughingly explains. “I think shooting in Shreveport (Louisiana) was very good for all of us. It was good that we weren’t in LA, because no one was from Shreveport, so we were out there in a new place, all together. On our weekends we would go to the fair and hang out. It definitely helped my performance. I think we were so comfortable together and we loved each other so much, that all came as a bonus. Hopefully, you see it on the screen as well – the camaraderie and that we care about each other.

“For me, personally, I would say that The East is a one step from being very special film to me, because of the whole experience,” he continues. “It was not just the chance to play Benji, so much, although I do love the character, but in terms of shooting it, I felt very lucky. When you have an experience like that, and when you are on your way back to LA, you’re like, ‘This is the reason I am an actor.’”
In an era where most major motion pictures have begin to shy away from onscreen nudity and sensual love-making sequences, Skarsgård jokes he had no problem baring it all for The East. “I’m clearly quite comfortable with it, because I’m always naked on True Blood," he says with a laugh. "Six years in and my clothes are usually off." The Stockholm-born son of famed actor Stellan Skarsgård reinforced his lack of physical inhibitions in the recent Season Six finale of True Blood. His vampire character, former Norse Viking Eric Northman, appeared au natural as he burst into flames. “I really don’t have a problem if being naked is an essential part of any story,” he contends. “A lot of actors find doing sex scenes awkward, I don’t think they are. I really don’t think twice about taking off my clothes if it makes sense.”

In The East, Alex was not the only cast member to shed his clothes for the camera. In one of the film’s most pivotal scenes, Benji and other members of the collective go skinny-dipping together in a lake. Skarsgård points to the sequence as a perfect example of how nudity was not used gratuitously by the director. “Within this group of characters many of them are attracted to each other and there is a lot of tension,“ he explains. “There’s a reason the nudity happens when it happens, and it made perfect sense to me in the script. I mean, they are naked in that lake. It would have been weird if they had been wearing board shorts. When you trust someone like Zal, you don’t blink when he says, ‘Okay, get naked because it is so hot outside.’ When you work with a filmmaker like Zal, you feel so protected. You couldn’t care less. It’s about the film and the storytelling."

In addition to returning to True Blood for its final season (announced by HBO) and a starring role in the upcoming horror/thriller Hidden, fans of Skarsgård may get the chance to see more of his physique if a cinematic reinterpretation of the Tarzan legend is given the green light to begin filming. With David Yates (Harry Potter) in the director’s chair, Alex in the lead role as the King of the Jungle and Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) as his possible nemesis, rumors have been circulating around Hollywood that a start date for the motion picture could be announced any day now. When asked if he will, indeed, be portraying the loincloth wearing Tarzan in the proposed big screen remake, Alex simply smiles. “We’ll see,” he says coyly. After gentle prodding, he adds. “It’s an interesting role, I would like to see it happen.”

With a résumé that includes appearances in Battleship, Generation Kill, Straw Dogs and Disconnect, his last three roles – as Benji, Lincoln and Eric – have given Alex the chance to flex his acting muscles. When asked which of these characters is closest to the real Alexander Skarsgård. “I think they are all a part of me," he declares. “In order to be true and real, I have to feel myself in that character and the character in myself."

After a year of delivering incredibly dynamic performances – as an underground activist, a surrogate dad and sexy bloodsucker – it’s obvious Alex loves to take creative chances. “For me, it’s important to play as many diverse roles as I can,” he insists. “As an actor, I always have this desire to be challenged. That’s why I like doing movies when I’m not doing True Blood. Shooting a film is always new and fresh and you can explore new things every single day. You go to bed after a day of shooting and think, ‘I didn’t expect that to happen.’

"Sometimes, on a show, where you’ve played a character for a long time, there’s a risk that it will feel redundant or repetitive or you’ll feel like, ‘Oh, I’ve shot this scene before, I’ve done it,’ Alex admits. "Then, you are not inspired or excited, and that, creatively, is very bad. It’s like creating career suicide, in a way, where you don’t feel challenged, where you don’t feel like you are growing or learning new things about the character. I think I’ve have been very

lucky with True Blood, because we have very good writers and we are six years in, but every season I get to do new things and explore new sides of Eric. So far, so good, because it’s still a lot of fun. I’ve been able to experience the best of both world and grown because of it. I’m just thankful I’ve given some wonderful opportunities to really act.”
