article imageReview: 2014 Corvette Stingray now on the showroom floor Special

By Elizabeth Parker     Oct 11, 2013 in Technology
It feels like a long wait since Chevrolet first announced they would be introducing the all new Corvette Stingray, seventh-generation in the Corvette history for the 2014 model year. They are now starting to trickle on to the the showroom floors.
This review isn't going to go over all the hype that makes the seventh generation Corvette great in GM's eyes. It's not about the 460 HP originally reported as 455 HP, the newly-designed stiffer frame, the upgraded seats, the carbon fiber hood, touch screen radio and navigation, whether it's lighter or heavier than the C6, or the world class handling you can read about in Car and Driver or on Edmunds. This about how it looks and feels in person when you finally get to see it and touch it. Does it live up to all the hype.

Since Chevrolet officially announced the 2014 model on January 13, 2013, a slew of Corvette enthusiasts have been patiently waiting the chance to get out and actually touch one of the beauties. The Corvette Forum has been full of daily chatter about the coming model since it was announced. Many have gone to see unveilings at auto shows and viewed every photo they could find online. Many of the cars have been pre-ordered by people that guessed what colors they would like when they could finally see them on their car.

In late September the previously-ordered cars began arriving at dealers for customers to come pick up. Most dealers kept these well away from the public's prying eyes and hands, not venturing to place them on the showroom floor. Being able to go see one in-person or purchase one was out of the question for the past few weeks.

At last some dealers are receiving their ordered cars for sale and displaying them on the showroom floor where you can get in and get a feel for the new C7 Corvette Stingray and actually purchase it. Two nearby dealers had Corvettes available for sale in the showroom I could view, get some photos of and have a seat in the newly designed driver's cockpit.

A third dealer, City Chevrolet in Charlotte, NC, had several of the new color combinations but I couldn't get into them. The two Corvettes on the showroom floor and the few I could get photos of parked around the dealership are all customer-owned and just waiting for their new owners to pick them up. Tim Dobbins at City Chevrolet did take time to show me what was there from a distance and answer my questions. I have yet to be able to take one out for a test drive, having to settle for a sit and playing with the lights and radio controls.

My first view of the black with black interior seen above didn't do it for me. It wasn't enough to convince me I needed to sign the dotted line or take advantage of the trade up offers I'd received from GM in my email. The black one above was viewed at a dealership in Greenville, SC. I was disappointed after all the hype, it was nice but not as earth shattering as I expected. Make sure you see more than one as my impression changed when I saw the next one and keeps getting better as I see more.

Seeing my second 2014 Corvette at Burns Chevy Cadillac in Rock Hill, SC impressed far more in the blade silver metallic. The contrasting colors of the silver with the black accessories and black see-through roof panel made the car for me. Lonnie Yeager at Burns Chevrolet in Rock Hill, SC, opened it up and let me have a seat while answering all my questions about the car. Lonnie had just transferred to Burns from City Chevrolet in Charlotte, NC so he had seen a few other colors and held the same opinion as me on the contrasting colors looking sharper than the solids and really making the vehicle. This will be personal taste though.

Sitting in the corvette I found the seats very comfortable, the dash lights were clear and interesting to look at and visibility out of the car seemed close, maybe a tad less than my current C6 model. I did ponder if a larger person will be as comfortable but was told the seat is highly configurable and is as comfortable for a larger person when set up for them as it is for me. Like the C6 Corvette, the C7 comes with the ability to memorize each driver's preset configuration and will move to the configuration of the key holder in range or button pressed.
At 5' 5" I seemed a perfect fit. I put my arm up on the side rest and my hand sat perfectly on the manual gear shift. The steering wheel was reached by my arms with a very comfortable elbow bend after setting the seat up to allow me to reach and depress the brake, clutch and gas. Depressing the pedals fully in the vehicle left me a good distance from the steering wheel and not feeling at all cramped or stretched. It was comfortable, just as promised.

After viewing the white and red combination above with the red running up the dash and then seeing a crystal red with the Kalahari leather interior being picked up by its new owner I am far more swayed to think about taking advantage of one of the trade up offers I've seen in my in-box.

Overall I have to say this is a beautiful car with lovely interiors that impress when viewed and sat inside of. I can't wait to see the convertible unveiled by GM on March 5, 2013 in Geneva when it hits the dealerships later this year.
But when will I finally be able to arrange a test drive?
