Irkutsk - A Russian couple hid in an outside bath house for several hours on Friday, Oct. 4 after a bear broke into their home and ate the borsch - beetroot soup - they had just made. The bear was attracted to the home by the delicious aromas from the cooling soup.
The couple were staying at their holiday home in Ust-Ilimsk and had cooked up a traditional borsch, a soup made from meat and beetroot. The couple slept in the bath house that night as the house was being renovated. They woke to the sound of loud banging and discovered a bear had broken a window and forced its way into the house.
The bear rampaged around the home for a while, overturning furniture, before it settled down to feast on the warm soup.
A neighbour alerted local police at around 0100 hours. By the time the police arrived the bear was padding around the garden and quickly loped back into the woods after police fired a warning shot.
Bears are known to forage around residential areas for food in this part of Russia and local police warned residents to be careful, although there haven't been any reports of bears attacking humans.
