A string of attacks in Egypt killed nine people, with the deadliest attack taking place in the the city of Ismailia, killing six soldiers.
In a worrying sign, today's violence was not confined to the lawless northern Sinai region, where insurgents have been on the attack on an almost daily basis, but involved attacks on the Egyptian mainland.
Six soldiers were killed in the city of Ismailia when gunmen launched an attack on soldiers sitting inside a pickup truck.
Three police officers were also killed when a car bomb exploded outside a state security building in southern Sinai, security officials have said that the cause of the bomb was a suicide bomber.
An attack also took place in a suburb of Cairo, when a rocket propelled grenade was fired at a state-owned television network, injuring two people according to security officials.
The latest string of attacks by militants comes a day after anti-government protesters took to the streets, leaving 53 dead.
