In ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’, inventor Flint Lockwood must once again save the world from his infamous machine when it begins to create mutant food beasts.
The idea of enormous foods, such as burgers, pizza and mountainous scoops of ice cream, falling from the sky seemed too ridiculous; but they exceeded expectations and made it work exceptionally well. Then it seemed like they were pushing their luck with food animals, a.k.a. “food-imals.” Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 once again asks audiences to take a leap of faith into palatable world of surprisingly inviting creations.
This film begins moments after Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and his friends saved Swallow Falls from a “disaster of epic portions” by terminating the "Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator" (FLDSMDFR). Flint’s dream is finally achieved when his idol, Chester V (Will Forte) – owner of The Live Corp Company – recruits him to join their team of inventors for a better tomorrow. Swept away to San Franjose, Flint is disconnected from everyone – until they realize his infamous invention survived and is now generating mutant food beasts that are taking over the island.
The Live Corp Company is like an extreme Google or Apple headquarters with bits of technology sprinkled throughout, including holograms and tube transport systems; eager creators excited to contribute; and a supreme leader whom everyone hopes to meet in-person someday. Even Steve (Neil Patrick Harris) meets his match in an orangutan with a human brain named Barb (Kristen Schaal). An amusing gag involving the endless supply of specialty coffee available runs its course then pops up as the occasional amusing visual cue throughout the picture.

The food-imals are fun, creative and vibrant, producing scenes that are busy with a variety of colourful treats for the senses. Some of the creatures include shrimp-anzees, fla-mangos, su-sheep and the dreaded taco-dile. Filmmakers do a wonderful job imagining this unique world so that its inhabitants are not only cute but almost logical and completely identifiable.
There's no doubt animators have once again beat the odds and created an enjoyable sequel to another surprise hit. The only aspects left for debate is which film is a close second to the other and whether they could have had more fun with the title.
