article imagePhoto Essay: Signs of the times in Fuengirola, Spain Special

By Anne Sewell     Sep 28, 2013 in World
Fuengirola - Around the town of Fuengirola there are several strong messages quite literally written on the wall. The following is a selection of some brand new, and some older, graffitti, all with an important meaning behind it.
Each morning the writer walks past the Plaza de Toros (bull fighting ring) in Fuengirola with her dog.
Today, something had changed — messages had appeared on the main entrance doors of the recently revamped building.
As more people in Spain protest against the brutal sport of bull fighting, there is likely to be much more graffitti of this nature:
Fuengirola Spain: Graffitt on the entrance doors of the Plaza de Toros (bull ring) - bullfighter de...
Fuengirola, Spain: Graffitt on the entrance doors of the Plaza de Toros (bull ring) - bullfighter dead, not the bulls.

The writer was supposed to attend an anti-Fascism protest outside the "Casa de la Cultura" (the Municipality's House of Culture) in Fuengirola today, but unfortunately got there too late. The protest was against the fact that fascism seems to be creeping back into Spain, as it is in several countries recently.
The writer did, however, get some photos of a message on the wall:
Fuengirola Spain: Fascism never again (no more).
Fuengirola, Spain: Fascism, never again (no more).
Fuengirola Spain: Fuengirola Spain: Fascism never again (no more).
Fuengirola, Spain: Fuengirola, Spain: Fascism, never again (no more).
Some older examples are relevant to today's world, where consumerism is more important than human beings:
Fuengirola Spain: Are you a human or a consumer?
Fuengirola, Spain: Are you a human or a consumer?
And this message, found in two locations, says it all: "When the last tree is cut, the last river polluted and the last animals destroyed, we will realize that money cannot be eaten."

Strong words indeed, and we can only hope that someone actually takes notice.
