article imageGirls’ Night Out supporting domestic violence shelter Special

By Justin King     Sep 28, 2013 in Lifestyle
Destin - The ladies of Florida came out in style to wine and dine in support of Shelter House, a local domestic violence shelter on September 26th at an Arabian Nights themed event.
The women arrived at the renowned Elephant Walk restaurant in Sandestin, Florida and after a brief check in; they headed down the red carpet where they were photographed by paparazzi before heading over to be served a glass of wine at the poolside bar while listening to a wonderful local band. All of the glitz, glamour, and publicity was in support of a subject that has historically been shrouded in secrecy. Shelter House and Proffitt PR teamed up to shine a giant spotlight on domestic violence and to raise money to further the shelter’s activities.

After the greeting, the ladies were treated to dinner, drinks, and dancing upstairs in the restaurant. A silent auction, with the proceeds benefiting Shelter House, followed. Everyone then headed back downstairs to enjoy a performance by a fire-eating juggler and a fireworks show over the Gulf of Mexico.

Shelter House provides services ranging far beyond the typical emergency shelter for those that are under immediate threat of becoming a victim. The center provides transitional housing, support groups, peer counseling, youth groups, and even a kennel for the animals of abuse victims.
Michelle Sperzel said
A lot of abused won’t leave their pets behind to suffer at the hands of their attacker. With this in mind we started the Kind Heart Kennel, an on-site pet kennel at our emergency shelter. People won’t have to choose between their own safety and the safety of their pets.
Providing all of these services is just the tip of the iceberg for Shelter House. The center is gearing up to provide services to the victims of sexual assault, as well as their families.

“Obviously we will be providing the full range of services to the victim, but we will be taking it a step further in providing services to family members. If, for example, a father is having a tough time dealing with an assault on his daughter, we can provide counseling for him.”
Proffitt PR has been hosting Girls’ Night Out events for the last two years, and each event has benefited a different charity, raising tens of thousands of dollars. The events are designed to provide talented professional women with a social outing free of the stresses of work. It is one of the largest women-only events of its kind in Florida.

The event turned the Elephant Walk’s already well-known facility into the place to be for the ladies of Destin’s society.
