article imageObama lauds Syria chemical resolution as a 'huge victory'

By Paul Iddon     Sep 27, 2013 in Politics
President Obama has hailed the UN resolution drafted with Russia's cooperation to dismantle Syria's chemical weapons arsenal as “a huge victory” for the world.
Daily Star Lebanon reports that the American president made these comments in the Oval Office whilst receiving the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said that there are still understandable concerns but lauds the deal for its clear legality.
He also said that since the UN Security Council has adopted the resolution, with the agreement of China and Russia who have often vetoed draft resolutions proposing to condemn Assad for his actions, is enforceable.
Omaha carried a report which quotes the president saying that he is “very hopeful for the prospects of what can be accomplished.”
Mr. Obama also claimed that his threat to launch military strikes against Damascus following the heinous sarin gas attack of August 21 was decisive when it came to bringing about the political decision making that has brought this resolution into being.
