article imageFake French 'clitoris' poll causes smug Italian media to mock

By Anne Sewell     Sep 27, 2013 in World
France has a version of the famous spoof website "The Onion", called "Le Gorafi". They published a fake poll which announced that 89 percent of French men thought the "clitoris" was a Toyota model. The Italian media mocked but ended up with red faces.
Now Le Gorafi (a play on the name of the real French newspaper Le Figaro) is having the last laugh as the major Italian media companies rushed to publish smug rebuttals.
The editors of the spoof news website (in French) ran the "story" recently, claiming that 89 percent of French men thought that the clitoris was a model of car. They just thought it would cause a chuckle from their regular readers, and never imagined that it would provoke more than that.
In the spoof article it mentions that Zein Sawaya is the person who compiled the poll. Apparently it took six months to interview more than 2,500 men of all profiles.
She then said that when asked about the clitoris, the conclusion is clear : "Nearly nine out of 10 men remain convinced that it is a Japanese car brand Toyota. 7 percent say that the clitoris has to do with a deity in Egyptian mythology. The remaining 4% said they had never heard of such a thing."
It seems the hot-blooded Italian media didn't bother to read the article thoroughly and just couldn't wait to pounce on the story to show up their romantically-challenged French rivals.
Not one, but at least six Italian news outlets raced to print, with a huge grin on their faces, the “findings” of the so-called TNS-Sofres survey mentioned by Le Gorafi.
The leading Italian news agency (in Italian) declared: "89 percent of French men confuse the 'clitoride', which in French is called the 'clitoris', with a car from the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota.”
The story was placed in the "Motoring" section of their website and very helpfully said, “Probably a confusion with the Toyota Yaris."

On top of that Sardinia’s leading newspaper, L’Unione Sarda (Italian), couldn't resist the opportunity to mock the French when it comes to erotic knowledge. Their contribution read:
"Along with Italians and Spaniards, they are universally considered to be the best Latin lovers in the world. And yet almost nine French men out of ten confuse the clitoris with a car," the paper mocked.

This piece of classic journalism was even reprinted by the Corriere della Serra, which is one of Italy’s oldest and most respected newspapers.
Just goes to show, if you have hot Latin blood, check first before mocking another news service (and maybe read the article properly first!).
