London - In an interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, rapper Kanye West discussed music, fashion, Nori, and more. He explained his focus on fashion as well as what Michael Jackson meant to him and to blacks in the music industry.
"I would not be Kanye West if I wasn't for Michael Jackson. He had to fight to get his video played because he was black," he said.
"For me and my life and my creativity, it's been challenging," he added.
"I was able to ascend to heights because of the foundation that my mother and my father and my grandfather laid through civil rights."
Wayne also thanked his mentor Jay Z for being very instrumental in his success.
"Me as Kanye West, a young revolutionary coming out of Chicago, wouldn't have made it without Jay-Z as my big brother, watching my back."
Yeezy is also known for his projects in the fashion world including collaborations with Nike and shows at Paris Fashion Week. He told Zane Lowe he has struggled to be taken seriously.
"T-shirts, that's the most we can make," he said, claiming that the fashion industry has not supported him as a black designer. Kanye explained his focus on fashion by saying, "It's not illegal to not listen to music. It's illegal to walk around naked," the Huff Post reports.
Not surprisingly at all, Kanye also discussed the paparazzi.
He told Zane what it was like to get attention from the media and the paparazzi.
"Paparazzi is necessary, not even a necessary evil, it just needs to be legalized, meaning at a certain point there's cut-off switches."
"They're selling our image and they're selling it in a bad way.
"I'm changing things for my daughter and I'm going to tell my daughter by the time she understands what it was, 'Me and your mother were in a completely different situation than you're in.
"'You see all this checks you're getting age six because people are taking your picture, you don't have to worry about a thing ever again just because people want to take your picture, and I made that happen Nori.'"
Kanye also spoke of his relationship with Kim Kardashian saying she has had a positive impact on his life.
"She gave me everything. She gave me a family. She gave me a support system."
Kanye also noted that Kim was in a situation where she could love him and it was just about him, not money. Kim can stand on her own. She doesn't need Kanye's money. Kanye explained to Zane how hard that was to find for him. It's nice to be loved for you, not for your money.
While Kanye spoke in depth about fashion, music, and love, this interview was also part of his promotional tour for his newest album, Yeezus, which Kanye told Lowe is is what "frustration sounds like."
"Rap is the new rock 'n' roll. We are the real rock stars and I'm the biggest of all of them. I'm the number one rock star on the planet," Yeezy told Zane.
"If you're a Kanye fan, you're not a fan of me, you're a fan of yourself. I'm just the espresso. I'm just the shot in the morning," West also said according to the Huff Post.
